Spintex: Sustainable textile by nature
Spintex’s brand video was recorded online due to covid restrictions.
Fighting an invisible enemy
How often do you check how the clothes you are buying are produced? You might sometimes choose a shirt made from organic cotton over other fibers, but it is very hard to constantly check what is the best option for you and for the planet. There are countless invisible enemies to consider from the chemicals being used, to the air and the water pollution, or even the truly damaging microplastics from synthetic fibers. Spintex addresses these challenges straight on, getting inspiration from nature to develop a sustainable textile, less harmful to the environment and your own health.

How it started.
Following thousands of years of R&D
In their quest to find sustainable textiles, the Spintex team didn’t have to start from scratch. The co-founders Alexander Greenhalg and Martin Frydych both have years of experience in microbiology and textile research. But beyond their scientific backgrounds or the team of engineers behind the company, they argue that their success was made possible thanks to the work of spiders. By studying the process of making spider silk, they realized that nature already had a solution for producing sustainable fibers; we just needed to adapt to our clothes. Three years and a lot more research later, Spintex is considered a pioneer in the sustainable textile industry, having secured multiple grants and working on making their innovation reach clothing factories.
“We believe there’s a better way to achieve great results using technology inspired by nature.”
Alexander Greenhalgh, co-founder, and CEO of Spintex
Circular Value Proposition.
A sustainable textile with countless applications
One of the most obvious advantages of the Spintex textile is that does not contain any plastic. Their spider-inspired textile is created by turning liquid protein into fibers. As simple as it sounds (and putting aside the incredible work of the Spintex team), this process is 1000 times more efficient than producing plastic-based fibers. It also emits 50% less CO2 than traditional silk production. Spintex’s solution is fully biodegradable and does not use any toxic chemicals to strengthen or color their material. This amazing material might accelerate the switch from fast-fashion to sustainable clothing, but the strength and lightness of the Spintex fiber also make it highly valuable for technical textiles.
Spintex’s innovation might be a game-changer in the fashion and the technical textile industries, making polymer a thing of the past.

Pitching a complex technology
As part of their funding strategy, Spintex signed up and was recognized as one of the most promising Dutch Postcode Lottery green challenge innovators. While their technology was impressive, describing it in a brief and compelling pitch for the competition was a real challenge. In this way, Circular Stories helped Spintex prepare their communication around their project, making sure their pitch was as fascinating as their innovation. Despite the Corona outbreak making meeting in person impossible, we also produced a video that would showcase their expertise and sustainable drive to the jury.

Changing the textile industry from within.
There are countless materials from which to make clothes and yet, it always seems to be a sustainable bottleneck. From synthetic polymers to cotton or wool, making strong and reliable clothes always comes with a high environmental cost. Spintex’s technology is currently disrupting this industry, and their efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. The European Commission, Fashion for Good, and many other organizations have offered their resources and financial support to the company. While it means that many sustainable actors believe in their talent, it also gives them the responsibility to fight against fast fashion. Alexander Greenhalg and Martin Frydych very much intend to do so, bringing a sustainable solution to an industry in dire need of change.
